English mania (Summary) (1) In this TED video, Jay Walker on Ted.com said that there are some manias in this world. (2) For instance, Biber mania with hysterical teenagers screaming, crying and pandemonium. (3) After that, sport mania with all for one idea to get the ball in the net. (4) Next, religious mania which has rapture, weeping and visions. (5) Manias can be good or can be alarming or even deadly. (6) However, the world has new mania that is learning English. (7) There are about 3 billion people in this world who are trying to learn English. (8) In Latin America, India, Southeast Asia, and most of all, in China. (9) Chinese students start learning English in the second grade. (10) Thus China would become the largest English speaking coutry. (11) So why do they learn English? (12) They believe that by learning English they have opportunity. (13) Opportunity for a better life, a job, to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table. (14) 90 million high school Chinese students have already taken a giant test for three full days, and 25 % of it is based on English. (15) It’s called the Kaogao. (16) Their future is determined by the score on this test. (17) They have to study for 12 hours in 4 years to prepare. (18) The intensity to learn English is almost unimaginable. (19) Mr. Walker said, English is the world's second language. (20) Your native language is your life. (21) But with English you can become part of a wider conversation, a global conversation about global problems, like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. (22) And now English is becoming the language of problem-solving. (23) Not because Britain is pushing it, but because the world is pulling it. (24) So English mania is a turning point.
